P-47 Pacific Theater Missions
Переглядів 42 тис.14 днів тому
I want to talk about some of the Pacific Theater P-47 missions. Missions in this theater were flown with a combat radius as far as 450 miles using very early Razorback Thunderbolts with the Brisbane drop tank. With Later Razorbacks as far as 500 miles WITH A BOMB, and bubbletop Thunderbolts ranged beyond 800 miles. The pilots of the Fifth Air Force Thunderbolts met the challenges of the Japanes...
P-47 Pacific Theater, The Brisbane Tank And Why It Matters
Переглядів 61 тис.14 днів тому
In the Pacific theater, the 348th fighter group of the 5th Air Force flying P-47 Thunderbolts used a locally sourced drop tank. It was designed an implemented in less than 8 weeks and gave the P-47s in theater a 450 mile combat radius. This tank is commonly called the "Brisbane Tank". It's quite a story. Have to say that I didn't know much about this aircraft before watching this video. There's just so many airplanes in WWII that got overshadowed by the more "glamorous" ones. I'd really like to see you do a video about the B-25. The variant with the 75mm cannon is fascinating and would like to learn about it's origins and use throughout the war.

I'm something of a history buff (I taught it), and when it came to the British aircraft of WWII, I was smitten with the Beaufighter. Of course, I was also intrigued with the Battle of the North Atlantic against the Wolf Packs and their suppliers, and the Beaufighter was reputedly the answer to the Condor, the German Navy's support aircraft. The Beaufighter had the legs to keep up with the Condor and the weapons to take them down. Coastal Command was the most underrated military command of WWII; both Bomber Command and Fighter Command got oodles of kudos, while Coastal Command largely worked in the dark, pulling loooong boring flights out over the featureless ocean in search of surfaced submersibles or their suppliers.

On March 4th 1943, the 363rd fighter group lost 11 planes. (51's). 12 entered the clouds at 500 feet. After 10 minutes , Lt William Schmidt said he felt things were not right and pulled away from the other 3 he was with and went on his own instruments, he pulled out of the clouds at 200 feet, saw several fires burning in the channel but could not identify any wreckage. None of the planes or pilots were ever found. There was a lot of speculation about what happened, broke out of the clouds and met the germans? But Lt Schmidt believed they all ended up in the channel. This would have been the tenth day of operations for the 363rd.

the crime here is that "they" sabotaged the capability in Europe to try to prove a useless point, even if b17s and b24s could fend for themselves (which they couldn't) it wouldn't hurt to have escorts.

Once again. My father, who was a lifetime bomber man. He flew B-17 's in WWII and was shot down shortly after the Stuttgart/ Regensburg raid. When he retired in 1968, he was in charge of MMS at Andersen Air Base. When asked about this, he would say; " after they crossed the Channel the Germans would jump the fighters and dive away making sure belly tanks would be dropped ". Have you ever hear that the fighter pilots had complained they were not allowed to follow them down? Thank you Doolittle.

I see you like the big birds with R-2800 engine. 🙂 You have many great videos about the P-47 and some also from the F4U Corsair, but I also would love to see you making some content about the F6F Hellcat. I saw some interesting datas, especially about the price, where as the F6F was listed as 35000 USD and the F4U and P-47 about the twice. Okay, the P-47 had a very complex turbosupercharging system, but the F4U had something similar (WWII wartime ones) like the F6F. Two questions: are these prices are about correct and if they are how does it possible? Some wartime economy also would be interesting. 😎

From russian sources:The unusual design with the engine behind the cockpit gave the aircraft good speed, maneuverability, aerodynamics and visibility. However, this also made it unstable and difficult to control, so that any mistake could be fatal. The Airacobra was therefore not an aircraft for beginners, but only for experienced pilots, which perhaps added to its appeal and was considered a badge of honor for the pilot. Soviet pilots raved about the fighter's 37 mm cannon (20 mm on early models). "The shells are very powerful. One hit and the enemy could usually say goodbye," recalled (rus) pilot Nikolai Golodnikov. The Cal.30 Brownings were less popular and were often removed to save weight. The undercarriage performed very well in snow, the Allison engine was initially not winterized. The aircraft was generally considered to be very bulletproof and robust, which was important because emergency exit through the strange car door in the air was problematic. The P39 was used only by Guards regiments, many of whom remained loyal to the type even when more modern types became available. For comparison, the Hurricane was very unpopular. "We got Hurricanes. They were a pile of junk, not an airplane," said Vitaly Klimenko, senior lieutenant of the 1st Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. "The MiG fighter had weaknesses near the ground, but it was a king in the air. The Hurricane, on the other hand, was neither fast nor well maneuverable. It had a thick wing profile. In our fighters, the armor of the pilot's seat was concave, but that of the Hurricanes was flat and easy to penetrate. Six to eight machine guns on board seemed like a good thing, but the ammunition load was very small. The Merlin XX engine was completely useless. During acceleration it could overheat and seize up."

The Avro Lancaster was in no way suited to delivering an atomic payload and was promptly dismissed from any serious consideration. The two monolithic stumbling blocks for the Lancaster, were it's lack of range and it's inaccessible, in flight bomb compartment. Greg systematically uncovers the other speculations on the subject and proves them to be unsupported also.

The first axial flow jet engine was built by British engineer Alan Arnold Griffith in 1923, actually predating the centrifugal flow jet engine developed by Frank Whittle. Griffith published his work and this was picked up by the Germans in the 1930s. The axial-flow engine was developed by Metropolitan Vickers (Metrovic) but was seen as inferior to the early Whittles in simplicity and power output From 1942 to 1945 the thrust had increased from 2,000 lbs to 5,000 lbs. The Jumo 004 never exceeded 2,646 lbs in the Me262. Some 80% of British and US fighters in the post war era 1945-52 flew on variants of the Whittle now being built by Rolls Rovce and others. The most infamous fighters being the MiG-15 and Mig-17. The axial-flow jets did not catch up in power output until the early 1950s, and then quickly surged ahead within a few years.

Just looking at this plane, and understanding its mid-engine design, tells this engineer it’s a winner. Form follows function. Cannon in the nose, etc., etc. Too bad it didn’t have a 2-stage supercharger.
